Crossing in a small sided game.

This is Charlie’s favourite session. He told me " It helps me with my all round game, positioning and communication. Taking a cross gives me more satisfaction than saving a shot because its more difficult" .

Key factors:

Starting position : The starting position will depend on where the ball is and which side it has been delivered from.

Set position : Tall as possible, confident and sideways on.

Assess the flight and pace of the ball : If the cross is high, move gradually in line so you are in a good position to make a claim. If its low, win the race to the ball or cover the near post.

Make a decision: Come or stay?

Communicate decision: "Keepers" or "away". Loud and as early as possible so defenders can react accordingly.

If coming, make next decision: Catch, punch or parry. Catch if possible, punch if crowded out, parry with fingers on one hand if stretching.
